Listen to: Foals
Since Tommy has dropped off the face of the earth apparently and I have begun to seriously doubt his commitment to the Bizzle Bros. I, Donnie B, will give you guys a band that I have been obsessed with the last couple of weeks since being introduced by the one and only Alli. I’ve enjoyed this band so much that at a recent trip to the now defunct New World Record, i bought the CD cover (as seen above) as a poster for my room. Granted, the investment was only 5 dollars, it was something I saw and just at the moment knew I wanted/needed.
Foals are a group of guys from England that play a very ‘dance-y’, fast drum and fast riffing guitar indie sound that I love. The vocals are also gorgeous, but what really sold me on this band was the dueling guitars from Yannis Philippakis and Jimmy Smith. When its really uptempo, they can make me just want to do some good old fashioned chair dancing. But they totally remind me of older emo scene, and I know they have no interest in aligning their musical neighbors with the scene of American kids. But its still there, the outfits are the same, hair do’s are the same, and hell they even hold there guitars up to their chest like the math rockers of america.
If your looking for musical counterparts, I suppose Bloc Party would be a fair assessment. ‘Balloons’ and their next single ‘Red Socks Pugie’ sound like songs that could have been released on any Bloc Party album, and are probably their better songs off Antidotes. However, listening to songs like ‘Big Big Love (2)’, I can’t help but think that I hear a little bit of Lawrence, Kansas emo in that sound. But whatever, this band has put out an amazing debut and probably one of the best CD’s to come out in 2008 (along with My Morning Jacket’s new CD Evil Urges, more on that later). If you have a chance go to their myspace and listen to a song or check out these live BBC videos below.
